A portfolio is the first thing a serious client checks, and freelancers without one lose work to freelancers with one, even when the work itself is comparable. The good news is that you no longer need to pay for hosting, a domain, or a designer to have a portfolio that looks professional. Several builders offer free plans that are genuinely enough for a freelancer.

The trade-offs of free plans are real: a builder subdomain instead of your own domain, some branding, and limits on pages or storage. For a starting freelancer, those trade-offs are acceptable, because a live portfolio today beats a perfect portfolio someday.
