  • Overview: Not every free image is free to use commercially. Learn which sites offer truly free licences, how to check attribution rules, and what to avoid....

Every website, social post, and product page needs images, and paying for stock photography on every project quickly becomes expensive for a small business or freelancer. Free stock photo sites solve that problem, but they come with a catch that many users miss: free to download does not always mean free to use commercially, and the licence terms vary from site to site and sometimes from image to image. Using an image outside its licence can lead to takedown notices, legal claims, or account problems, especially for commercial projects such as advertisements, product packaging, or client work. Learning which sites offer genuinely free commercial licences, and how to verify the terms for each image, protects your work and keeps your projects safe.

The safest licences for commercial use are public-domain dedications, such as CC0, which allow use for any purpose without attribution, and permissive free licences that allow commercial use with or without attribution depending on the site. Some sites use their own licence that permits commercial use but forbids reselling the image itself, using it in a way that implies endorsement, or redistributing it as part of a competing stock library, and those restrictions matter when you create templates or products for clients. Always check the licence on the specific image page rather than assuming a site-wide rule, because contributor uploads can carry different terms, and keep a record of where each image came from and under which licence you used it, since that record is your defence if a question ever arises. When in doubt, choose another image with clearer terms, because no single photo is worth a legal dispute.

Unsplash offers a large, high-quality library under a permissive licence that allows commercial use without attribution, though attribution is appreciated, and its search covers most business, lifestyle, and nature topics well. Pexels is similar, with photos and videos under a licence that permits commercial use, and it is particularly strong for video clips and everyday scenes. Pixabay covers photos, illustrations, vectors, and music under a content licence that allows commercial use with some restrictions on identifiable people and trademarked items. For more specialised needs, sites such as Burst focus on business imagery, while Openverse aggregates openly licensed images from many sources with licence filters, which helps when you need a specific licence type. Using two or three of these sites together covers almost every project without spending anything.

Images showing recognisable people, private property, logos, or trademarked products carry extra risk even on free sites, because the photographer may not hold a model or property release for commercial use, and some sites mark such images with restrictions you must read. Avoid sites that bundle stock images with unclear licences, watermarked previews, or aggressive download buttons, since these often repackage images they do not own, and a download from such a site is not a licence at all. Never use images found through a general web search without verifying the licence, because search results include copyrighted work, and the fact that an image appears freely on the internet does not make it free to use. When a project involves a client, tell them which images you used and under which licences, since that transparency protects both of you and signals the professionalism that wins repeat work. Above all, start with the simplest version that solves your immediate problem, use it consistently for a few weeks, and only add complexity when a real limitation appears, because the tools that survive are the ones that fit your daily routine rather than the ones with the longest feature list.
