Email marketing remains the highest-return channel for most small businesses, and the free tiers of email tools are good enough to start properly: a list, a signup form, a welcome email, and a monthly newsletter. The businesses that fail at email do not fail on tool choice; they fail on list building and consistency. Pick a free tool, build the habit, and the tool's limits will tell you when you have outgrown it.

Most free email plans share the same shape: a contact limit, often a few hundred to a couple of thousand subscribers, and a monthly sending limit, often a few thousand emails. For a business starting out, that is plenty — a list of five hundred genuine subscribers receiving one good email a month uses a fraction of it. Check what the free plan actually includes before you commit: signup forms, basic automation like a welcome email, simple templates, and reporting on opens and clicks. Watch for the branding question too: some free plans add the provider's logo to your emails, which is acceptable at the start but worth removing once your list grows.

Lists grow from offers, not from forms alone. A signup form that says join our newsletter converts poorly; a form offering something specific — a discount, a guide, early access to a sale, a useful checklist — converts far better. Place the form where interested people already are: your website's homepage, your checkout page, your social profiles, and your physical premises with a simple printed prompt. Ask only for what you need at signup — usually a name and email — because every extra field reduces signups.

Subject lines decide whether an email is opened at all. Keep them short, specific, and honest about what is inside: a new product, a limited offer, a useful tip. Inside, write one idea per email with one clear action — read, book, buy, reply — rather than cramming five announcements into a wall of text. Use a simple template with your branding, a readable font size, and a plain-text feel even in a designed email. Send on a consistent day and time so subscribers learn to expect you, and start monthly before increasing frequency; a business that emails weekly with nothing to say loses subscribers faster than one that emails monthly with something worth reading.

Even free plans usually include basic automation, and a welcome sequence is the highest-value automation a small business can set up. When someone joins, send an immediate welcome with the promised offer, a second email a few days later introducing your best products or services, and a third with a customer story or a useful tip. That short sequence turns a cold signup into a warm relationship without any further effort from you. Later, add a simple abandoned-cart or appointment-reminder email if your business suits it. Email tools are free to start and forgiving to learn — but the list you build on one is an asset you own, so export it regularly and keep a backup outside the tool.
