Small businesses guess at what customers want far more than they ask, and free survey tools make asking easy: a short questionnaire, a link, and answers you can act on within days. The businesses that benefit most are the ones that ask one clear question at a time — how was your visit, what should we stock, why did you leave — instead of sending a twenty-question form nobody finishes. A good survey is short, specific, and visibly acted on.

Response rates depend on question design. Start with a single overall question — a rating or a simple recommendation score — then add at most four follow-ups that explain the rating. Mix question types deliberately: rating scales for tracking over time, multiple choice for facts like how customers found you, and one open question for the answer you did not expect. Avoid leading questions, double questions that ask two things at once, and jargon your customers do not use. Test the survey on two people before sending it widely; a confusing question produces confident-looking bad data, which is worse than no data.

Free survey plans typically limit the number of responses per survey, the number of questions, or access to advanced features like logic that shows different questions to different respondents. For a small business surveying tens or a few hundred customers, those limits rarely bite. Check the essentials before you commit: whether you can export responses, whether the survey works well on phones — most customers will answer on one — and whether your branding can appear instead of the provider's. If you need logic jumps or thousands of responses, that is the point where a paid plan earns its price; until then, a free plan and a short survey are enough.

Timing and channel decide response rates. Ask soon after the experience — a day after a visit, a week after a delivery — while the memory is fresh and the customer still cares. Send the survey through the channel the customer already uses with you: email for online buyers, a printed code on a receipt for walk-in customers, a message link for regulars. Offer a small incentive only if it fits your business, like entry into a monthly draw, and always say how long the survey takes. A survey that promises two minutes and delivers ten loses trust as well as responses.

Surveys fail when nothing changes afterwards. Read responses weekly while a survey runs, fix the quick problems immediately — a confusing sign, a slow process, a product customers keep requesting — and tell customers what changed because of their feedback. A short message — you asked for longer opening hours, so we now open an hour earlier — closes the loop and makes the next survey easier. Track one or two headline numbers over time, such as overall satisfaction or the recommendation score, and review them monthly alongside sales. Feedback is only valuable when it changes a decision, and the cheapest way to improve a small business is to ask the people already paying it what they want next.
