Clients rarely hire a freelancer they have never seen work from. They hire the one whose portfolio shows exactly the kind of project they need. A portfolio does not have to be a website — a well-organised PDF, a Notion page, or a Google Slides deck built from a free template works just as well, and you can put one together in a single afternoon.

A good portfolio template has four parts. The introduction is a short paragraph about who you are and what you do — two or three sentences, no life story. The work samples are the core: six to ten of your best pieces, each with a title, a one-line description of the project, and the result it achieved. The services page lists what you offer and who it is for. And the contact page makes it easy to reach you, with an email address and a link to book a call.

Free portfolio templates are available in Canva, Notion, Google Slides, and PDF formats. Canva is the easiest starting point: its free plan includes portfolio templates you can customise with your own work and export as a PDF or a shareable link. Notion works well if you want a live page you can update in minutes, and Google Slides is best if you present your work on calls. Whichever format you choose, keep the design clean and let the work speak — a portfolio that is hard to read is worse than no portfolio at all.

Choosing what to include matters more than how many pieces you show. Pick your six best projects, not your twenty most recent — quality beats quantity, and a weak piece drags down the strong ones. For each piece, write one sentence about the problem, one about what you did, and one about the result. Numbers help: 'increased sign-ups by 30 percent' is far more persuasive than 'designed a landing page'. If you have no client work yet, create three sample projects for imaginary clients in your niche — honest sample work beats an empty portfolio every time.

Update your portfolio every month, not once a year. Add new work as it finishes, remove anything that no longer represents your best, and keep the contact details current. Send the portfolio link with every proposal and every enquiry reply, and mention it in your social profiles. A portfolio is not a one-time project — it is a living document, and the freelancers who keep it fresh are the ones who keep getting hired.

A PDF portfolio and a live portfolio page serve different purposes, and many freelancers need both. A PDF is best for emailing with proposals and for clients who want to save or print your work — it looks the same everywhere and it works offline. A live page on Notion, Canva, or your own site is best for sharing a link, because you can update it instantly and track who visits it. Keep both versions in sync, and use the PDF for proposals and the link for everything else.

Whichever format you choose, make sure it loads fast and looks good on a phone. Most clients will open your portfolio on their mobile first, and a page that is slow or hard to read on a small screen will be closed in seconds. Test it yourself on your phone before sharing it, and ask a friend to open it cold and tell you what they remember after thirty seconds. If they remember your best piece and how to contact you, the portfolio works.
